Its name derives from the Greek "amethystos", which means "not drunken" and signifies a clear mind. It is the purple variety of Quartz. Quartz is also the most varied of all minerals, occurring in all different forms, and habits. Quartz frequently forms the inner lining of geodes. Most geodes have an inner layer of larger crystalline Quartz, and an outer layer of Chalcedony or banded Agate.
