Bog-wood is a material from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. The wood is usually stained brown by tannins dissolved in the acidic water. Irish bog-oak usually ranges in age from 3000 to 8000 years old. The Irish climate was warmer and drier at that time in our history and when the climate changed to a wetter and damper era the roots lost their grip in the soggy soil and fell to the ground. The centuries-long process of the oak residing in the earth results in colour alteration from golden-brown to completely black. No two pieces of wood will ever be exactly the same colour.
Like no two pieces of bog oak being the same, each piece of jewellery is handcrafted to be completely bespoke, giving it a rustic finish. Designed with care, each piece is lightly brushed with linseed oil to enhance the oak’s rich colour.

Design has always been my passion. It wasn’t until I discovered bog oak that my passions grew into something more. I have always loved to create and being one with nature, Bog Oak was just the outlet I needed to turn that love of design into a business. Bog Oak is a unique natural material which is somewhere between 4000 and 5000 years old. It is rich in history and holds a great connection to the earth. Creating sculptures using bog oak allows me to deepen my connection with nature and brings me closer to my home – Ireland. Each piece of wood is chosen carefully and thoroughly, and I do my best not to waste a single piece. A lot of the Bog Oak that can be found in the boglands is left untouched and sometimes even disposed of. However, through my work I give it a new lease of life. Like the oak itself, each piece that I carve (whether it is jewellery or a sculpture) reflects its unique shape and maintains its ingenuity. My projects are created with passion and love for design, I put emphasis on accuracy and uniqueness, because precision is more important that quantity. The heritage and history of the Bog Oak is close to my heart and it brings me such joy to see it being appreciated by other like minded individuals. ♡
