    Cork Harbour Tide Clock.

Cork Harbour (Irish: Cuan Chorcaí) is a natural harbour and river estuary at the mouth of the River Lee in County Cork, Ireland. The main tributary to the harbour is the River Lee which after flowing through Cork City passes through the upper harbour (Lough Mahon) in the northwest before passing to the west of Great Island with the main channel emerging into the lower harbour past Haulbowline Island.

The harbour has been a working port and a strategic defensive hub for centuries, and it has been one of Ireland’s major employment hubs since the early 1900s. It still has major and strategic significance in energy generation, shipping, refining and pharmaceuticals.

Cork Harbour contains a number of islands of various sizes, some of which are connected to the mainland by bridges.

Cork City is located slightly upstream on the River Lee on the northwest corner of Cork Harbour. Several of the city’s suburbs, including Blackrock, Mahon, Douglas, Passage West and Rochestown lie on Lough Mahon or the Douglas Estuary, both of which are parts of Upper Cork Harbour.

Portrane or Portraine is a small seaside settlement, one kilometre from, and merging into, the small town of Donabate in Fingal, Ireland. It lies in the Barony of Nethercross, in the historic County Dublin.

Portrane has a 2 km (1.2 mi) long sandy beach backed by sand dunes. There is a carpark, but access to the beach is restricted to pedestrians. At the north end of the beach is a National Heritage Area which is visited by many migratory birds during the winter.

The coast in this area is subject to erosion, and since the 1980s, 100 acres (40 ha) of beach at Portrane has been lost. Many houses on the peninsula were demolished in the 1960s due to the dangers of erosion. A storm in March 2018 caused erosion of low cliffs backing the beach, and one home was destroyed. Concrete structures known as sea bees have been placed below the cliffs, but the erosion continues and further houses are threatened

    Portmarnock Tide Clock

Portmarnock lies on the coast between Malahide and Baldoyle. Portmarnock could also be said to border, at sea, Sutton and perhaps Howth in the form of Ireland’s Eye. Its major beach, the Velvet Strand, is monitored by a lifeguard during the summer season from early April to the start of October.

    Velvet Strand, Portmarnock beach

Adjacent to Portmarnock is a narrow beach which extends onto a sandy peninsula with beaches on all sides. Portmarnock’s beach is nicknamed the Velvet Strand due to the smooth sand along the beach, and is popular with wind- and kite-surfers

The beach was the starting point for two important pioneering flights. On 23 June 1930 Australian aviator Charles Kingsford Smith and his crew took off in the Southern Cross on the second westbound transatlantic flight (to Newfoundland), after which they continued on to Oakland, California, completing a circumnavigation of the world. The first solo westbound transatlantic flight began from Portmarnock beach when Jim Mollison, a British pilot, took off in a de Havilland Puss Moth on 18 August 1932 bound for Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick, Canada.

The sculpture Eccentric Orbit (by Rachel Joynt and Remco de Fouw, erected 2002) on the seafront is of limestone, bronze and stainless steel. The needle points to the North Star, an age-old navigation point. The sculpture commemorates the epic flights of the Southern Cross (the second non-stop east-west North Atlantic flight, in 1930), the Heart’s Content (the first east-west non-stop solo North Atlantic flight, 1932) and the abandoned solo North-Atlantic flight of Faith in Australia (1933).

Portmarnock is home to one of the 29 Napoleonic Martello Towers in the Greater Dublin Area.

In Irish its name was originally Rinn Dubháin, Dubhán’s point, named for a 5th-century Brittonic saint of that name (literally “little black [haired] one”). The English name is possibly a calque of his name, incorrectly read as being dubán, “fishing-hook.”

This area is renowned as the location of Hook Lighthouse, the oldest working lighthouse in the world.

Tramore ( Trá Mhór, meaning “great strand”)is a seaside town in County Waterford, on the southeast coast of Ireland. With humble origins as a small fishing village, the area saw rapid development upon the arrival of the railway from Waterford City in 1853. Initially the town flourished as a tourist destination, attracting visitors from as far away as Dublin in summer and from closer to home all year-round. As the population grew steadily in the latter part of the 20th century, Tramore became a satellite and dormitory town of Waterford City, situated some 13 km to the north. Today the town is a popular destination for surfing and other water sports due to its large, sheltered bay and provision of accommodation and amenities.
