Memory bears are bears created from fabric that has sentimental value. Most bears are made to remember a loved one who has died.
About MaryJo
Mary and Jo are actually two people! We are sisters. It started in 2021, after our father died. Mary used Dad’s old pyjamas to make memory bears (of all sizes) for his 9 children and 18 grandchildren. The bears were so well received and Mary enjoyed making them so much, she began making some for friends. Requests for bears began to come thick and fast! Jo came on board then, to help develop the business side and help with the orders.
About the bears
These memory bears are hand-made and, unlike commercially made bears, they are completely unique and may have little idiosyncrasies. Some hand-stitching may be visible and the bear will reflect the fabrics provided.
Bears can be made from a variety of fabrics and it entirely depends on the sentimental significance of the material. Generally, woolen items are tricky to work with: Cotton is excellent, as is denim and polyester. Even very thin and fine fabrics can be included, as they are ‘stabilised’ in the process.
It is best to provide a minimum of 3 fabrics and ideally four of five. It is not that a great volume of fabric is needed, but the more choice in fabric, the more likely that a design that is aesthetically pleasing can be found. Also, please try to include at least one light coloured item- they work better when making bear faces.
What does the process involve?
The garments are sorted and cut into large pieces, depending on the number of bears ordered and the size of bears required. All fabric is ‘stabilised’ using interfacing. This involves ironing on a thin layer of soft white material to the underside of the fabric provided. This makes it stronger and less likely to fray in the future. Very light, gauze-like material may need two layers of interfacing, before it is robust enough to use.
The pattern of the bear is then drawn onto the fabric. We use the same basic bear shape for all memory bears, but adjusted for size. Each bear is made up of at least 26 different stitched parts, plus the stuffing.
