This series is celebrating Ireland’s native trees. The Rowan (Caorthann in Irish) or Mountain Ash has always been considered a tree of formidable magical and protective powers due to its bright flame-red berries.

In ancient Ireland the importance of trees meant there was a series of laws governing their use and fines for damaging or cutting trees. For example for cutting a branch of an oak or an ash tree the fine was a year old heifer, but for removing the tree completely the fine was the value of two and a half milch cows. The laws recognised a hierarchy of four classes of trees or bushes: the nobles of the wood, the commoners of the wood, lower divisions of the wood, and bushes of the wood.
The nobles of the wood are oak, hazel, holly, yew, ash, pine, and crab apple. The commoners are alder, willow, hawthorn, rowan, birch, elm and cherry. (Source: Niall Mac Coitir – Ireland’s Trees)

The elm, with its rich foliage and sap, is associated with fertility, and the ability of its timber to remain submerged in water without rotting makes it a symbol of durability. In early Irish law whitethorn was classified as an Aithig fedo or Commoner of the Wood.

This series is celebrating Ireland’s native trees.Oak – Dair. The oak provides strong and excellent timber and a plentiful crop of acrons which provides food fro many animals. This, together with its stately bearing and long life, make it a symbol of strength, fertility, kingship and endurance. In early Irish law oak was classified as one of the seven Airig fedo or Nobles of the Wood. Oak timber was used for construction of buildings and ships to barrels and furniture.

This series is celebrating Ireland’s native trees. Hawthorn or whitethorn – Sceach Gheal lit. Bright bush. The hawthorn, whitethorn or maybush, with its white blossoms and thorns is a symbol of Maytime, and of magical powers and the ‘little people’ or fairies. As such the hawthorn, especially the ‘lone bush’ has always been regarded with a mixture of fear and respect. It was said to be very unlucky to bring hawthorn into the house. In early Irish law whitethorn was classified as an Aithig fedo or Commoner of the Wood. It’s wood was not much used and berries only eaten when there was nothing else to eat.

This was my first completed painting for 2020.
It is of a beach near Lackeen Point in Kenmare, Co Kerry, and is from a beautifully captured photo from a truly talented local nature photographer named Sharon Leahy.
I was mesmerized with the sun shining on the sea and glowing through the sea kelp left on the pebbles as the water receded. I tried to capture that beauty in my painting.

This is a digital print of my Robin painting , I painted the Robin because she visited me all last year in the studio, as it was lock down she was nearly the only visitor I had! It is 20cm sq.

This is a digital print of a painting I did of the back hall in the house I grew up in. The house is very old and the hall has flagstones which made a lovely sound when someone walked on them. It was also where the scuttles and ashes bucket were kept for the Aga. The print is 39x75cm.

This is a digital print of a painting I painted in the summer down by the pier in Cork City. It is 20cm sq and is mounted.

Derrynane 297mm x 210mm – Framed Print Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper This painting was a wonderful journey, shared all the way with my fellow artist, the amazingly talented photographer, Sharon Leahy. It was from her photographs that capture the spirit and rugged beauty of the old Abbey Ruins in Derrynane, Co Kerry that I have tried to recreate in painting form. This wall with the three window arches is nearly 1000 years old and was supposedly built by the same order of monks from Skellig Micheal. There is a burial ground on the site that is still used and as per tradition, I believe the coffins are carried across the beach as it can only be accessed at certain times with the tides. Here the remains of “the great liberator” Daniel O Connells wife, Mary O Connell are buried. I had never heard of this place before and am always amazed at the unsurpassing history and beauty in that we are blessed to have in this land.
