Corry Strand lies at the foot of Corry Mountain on the northern shores of Lough Allen, in Co. Leitrim. The strand is a noted area for boating, angling and swimming opportunities, with space for over-night camping and caravaning. The strand is infamous for a boating tragedy, which took place on Good Friday, April 2, 1831, when 14 people, four men and 10 women lost their lives. On that fateful morning 18 people set off for the market town of Drumshanbo at the southern end of the lake. They arrived safely at the market town, planning to leave on the return journey in the mid-afternoon. Laden with oats and potatoes purchased at the market, the boat sat considerably lower in the water than on the southerly leg on the journey. Two members of the party decided against making the journey. As darkness descended on the lake a gale blew up and the boat capsized. The bodies were located the following morney and buried in a mass-grave in Kilbride Cemetery. A large stone was erected over the grave.
